oh, woe is me!

Our commitment to Kyoto would have meant reducing our Green House Gas emissions to 571 megatonnes by 2010, 6% below 1990 levels.

The Clean Air Act would reduce GHG emissions by 45-60% of 2004 levels by 2050. In 2004 GHG levels were at 758 megatonnes. This would be a reduction to 341-454 megatonnes by 2050.

Good numbers to set as a goal, unfortunately the timeframe is too long to mitigate any of the damage we're already beginning to experience. Projecting those levels by 2020, would have been more compelling. What we got was more PR.

The weasels have spoken

More weasel words from the minister of environment and the minister of health. More consultations, more talk, more hot air. No targets and more jabs at the previous government's failures. How did we achieve acid rain reductions? By having targets. And I refuse to see how this is made in canada.

When this new legislation does not get passed, this becomes an election issue and we'll have to wait for another government to provide legislation which may or may not be effective.

The evidence is out there, predictions based on that evidence have come to pass yet little has been done. Government chooses to remain ineffective in the onslaught of PR and corporate lobbying.

more dead in afghanistan

death toll in afghanistan

Why does the first paragraph of every story about Canadian soldiers, end on some variation of the phrase, since 2002? If we look at the numbers year by year we see that there were four killed, by friendly fire, in 2002; two killed in 2003; one, early in 2004; one late in 2005 and then we come to 2006.

Since January 15, of this year, we have the killings of one diplomat and 34 soldiers. At this rate we may expect to see another seven or eight killed before Christmas. I'm not going to blame the mounting death toll on our current government in Ottawa or on any change in policy since the beginning of Canada's role in Afghanistan. I would like to read a first paragraph that ends with, "one diplomat and 34 soldiers killed in Afghanistan, since January 15, 2006.
