So, George W. Bush won't address the Canadian Parliament because his advisors fear he'll be heckled, yet he'll go to Halifax to thank, belatedly, the people of Halifax for their 9/11 help. Do his advisors think that he won't be heckled in Halifax? Perhaps the group he plans to address is being handpicked to avoid the heckle and to appear to Canadians that somebody out there really likes him, hmm. I await the day.

Venezuela, the unreported country

commentary on Reuters reporter Patrick Markey by David Cabrera

another story from The Guardian with no mention of the N.E.D.

I saw no mention of this story in the G&M this morning, nothing in the National Post, but there was a story in the Toronto Star with no mention of the involvement of the N.E.D.

N.E.D. - National Endowment for Democracy. See yesterday's postings.

However, if her constituents would rather she remain silent then she should follow their wishes accordingly. Isn't that what we all want from our MPs?

I need more practice writing letters to the editor

Paul Martin visited Haiti yesterday and the Globe&Mail's Brian Laghi wrote an article. I have replied with this letter:

It's good to see that Canada will be sending more support to Haiti. There are several points in Brian Laghi's article that I would like to clarify. One, Mr. Martin claimed that "none of the institutions of democracy were put in place". In November 2000, elections were held and Aristide was elected, by a landslide, to a six year term. Two, there are conflicting reports about Aristide's ousting; CARICOM and the African Union have called for a complete investigation. There are many, around the world, who believe that the U.S.A backed Aristide's removal. Three, Andre Apaid, is also the owner of a garment manufacturing firm, that was among those opposed to Aristide's move to raise the Haitian minimum wage.

I predict that it will not see the light of day.

Haiti and the No Damn Phat Party

Haiti: A Brutal Regime Shows Its Colours

Council On Hemispheric Affairs

Congresswoman Maxine Waters on Haiti

Disturbing the Peace by Brian Concannon

No reply to the email I sent to all the elected parties in Parliament. It seems the NDP now stands for No Damn Phat: they've become an advocate for the elimination of trans-fats from our diets which is so much more important than the starving, oppressed of Haiti. I'm sorry, I'm using sarcasm, tsk, tsk.

Yes, I know one underfunded, under-represented party can't save all the poor of our hemisphere or rise to champion all the poor and oppressed and I also know that the poor consume more trans-fats than other socioeconomic groups and I also know that lifestyle changes i.e. diet changes, are less important than seeing everyone under our influence e.g. Haiti, have their basic rights taken away; this would also include the right to not die of starvation. convoluted syntax or just bad grammar: you decide.

Walking: We Ask Questions

Walking: We Ask Questions Essay #7 from the Book, 'We Are Everywhere'.

I've received no replies for the letter I sent to MPs yesterday and perhaps my only answer will come in the reporting of Paul Martin's upcoming trip to Haiti. Of course, the killing and the oppression continue whether there are articles to read about it or not.

Life is not composed of photo ops and soundbites. 100% of the struggle continues unabated, backstage where there are no cameras, there are no reporters, and there are no reality shows; backstage where life is lived and billions of players are crushed by the boots and well rehearsed
(does that mean put the coffin back in the hearse after it's rolled down the hill?) lines of the oft surveyed stage players, the 'newsmakers of the day' .

Hail Caesar! The War Continues

Dear Mr. Drucker: A Letter to the US Embassy in Colombia

Haiti: Poverty's Abstract

Leftist Electoral Victories in Latin America

The morning after Justin Podur's assessment of Bush's victory.

Though I was of the mind that it didn't matter who won the election, Team A or Team B, I was deflated by the result. I think that Podur's article shed a little light on why I may feel this way. Until now I believed that Bush's victory in 2000 was illegitimate and that this election would vindicate that assertion. Now, what I have is vindication that what Bush wants is what Americans want. True, he won only 51% of the popular vote and probably 38-39% of eligible voters did not vote, and this leaves the USA divided, but... clearly I was holding out hope.
